I’m back to work now (things are going well) and we’re back to “real life.” Sandra and the kids have had their first week home alone. As Sandra says, some of the days were better than others. On Monday, everyone was pretty much on schedule and things went surprisingly well. On Friday, though, the girls were fussy, Sandra had a cold, and Daniel came down with the flu – he threw up for the first time in his two years on Friday afternoon. Sandra left me a message at work saying “there is a situation.” I correctly understood that to mean I shouldn’t dally getting home.
On either side of the ‘first week alone,’ though, our sisters came to visit. Amy was in town my first week back to work and Dory is in town now. Daniel was super-excited to see his aunts (as were Sandra and myself), and it’s been nice having extra hands to help with the girls. I think Amy left pretty tired – we’ll see how Dory fares.
The girls are definitely getting bigger and older looking. Stacie had a growth spurt and she started to feel almost as heavy as Josie, but then Josie had her own growth spurt and cemented her place as the big girl. They’re cooing and smiling more. Below are some videos of them ‘talking,’ and some pictures and videos from the aunts’ visits.

I’ve meant to keep this blog more up to date, but things have been busy, busy, busy here! Since the last post, the girls have gotten really big (Stacie was 8 pounds, 8 ounces at 4 weeks and Josie – now clearly the bigger girl – was 9 pounds, 1 ounce). They have pretty good neck control now and have grown large enough that they don’t fit in newborn size diapers or clothes anymore. Some people say they look a lot alike, but they’re clearly different to me and Sandra (see for yourself in the pictures, below). Stacie’s face is rounder, a little bit fairer, has dimples, and she’s noticeably smaller. Josie, on the other hand, has a taller forehead, larger eyes, fuzzier hair, and is taller. Their personalities are also quite different. Stacie is super laid-back while Josie is, as Sandra says, more passionate. Josie likes lying on her tummy, while Stacie likes being on her back. Stacie loves her pacifier while Josie is ambivalent towards it. Stacie often falls asleep eating, Josie would never dream of such a thing and sucks voraciously! That’s probably why Josie’s getting so much bigger. The doctor said they’re both healthy weights, though, so we don’t have to worry about Stacie – she’s just smaller. Unfortunately, they still don’t sleep great. They’ve improved recently to doing a couple three hour stretches at night. Until this week, though, even that was a lot to ask. With all the sleeplessness, Sandra’s parents came to visit a couple weeks ago. It was great to see them and a wonderful relief to have help. Daniel, also, thought it was great having ‘Ma and Pa’ staying at his house (and an air mattress in the living room for him to jump on). Ma and Pa got to learn all about Daniel’s trains and blocks, and they got to change a whole lot of little diapers (between all the kids, we use >20 diapers a day! I’ve begun buying big boxes of them from Amazon). It was sad to see them head back to Ohio, but Amy will be in town starting tomorrow night, so that will be good.
The girls aren’t the only ones growing, though. Daniel’s sprouted up and wears 3T clothes now and talks non-stop. He always wants to be included in our conversations and some of his new favorite phrases are “What’s Daddy talking about?” or “What’s Mommy talking about now?” Anytime he doesn’t understand what we’re saying, he’ll pipe up with one of those. He has been adjusting to life with the girls and is a very good big brother. He’s extremely affectionate and loves touching them gently or giving them kisses. He also helps by bringing them toys when they’re sad or rocking their car seats. He doesn’t like to hear them cry and tells us, “Baby sisters crying again,” when they do it. When they quiet down, he checks with us, “Baby sisters ok now?” He’s pretty good at telling them apart and knows who is who more than half the time, even when first entering the room (and once we tell him for a given day, he doesn’t forget). Early on, he had trouble with that, though it led to some funny lines. At one point I came in the room with Stacie and told Daniel, “Look, here’s Miss Stacie.” He replied, “Where’s Miss Other Baby Sister?”
At first, Daniel had trouble with the fact that Sandra’s not allowed to pick him up because of her c-section recovery, but we explained that Mommy had a boo-boo and would be able to pick him up again later. He’s come to terms with that and now reminds her about it, instead of the other way around! He’s come to really like puzzles, and is very good at them. He also plays a bit more on his own (probably of necessity) now that the girls are here. Daniel also had his first visit to the dentist this week. He was nervous about it, but did very well and got a little stuffed giraffe from the dentist for being so well behaved.
We had a photographer come to the house this week to get some shots of the girls and our growing family, so we should have some fun pictures to share here soon (you can see the girls in their ‘photo-day tutus’ below). The photographer was very impressed with how strong the girls were and told Daniel that he was a very cute model.
My first day back to work is Monday, so things might get even crazier here. As I mentioned, though, Amy will be in town for the first week, so Sandra can sort of ease into being a stay-at-home mom of three. The past six weeks have been stressful and tiring, but they’ve been great. A couple people have asked if I miss work. I really like my job, but oddly I haven’t missed it – maybe I’m just too busy to think about it It’s been wonderful getting to spend more time with Daniel and getting to bond with the girls. Even while I enjoy the relative peace of my office next week, I expect that I’ll miss Sandra and the kids.
We’ve taken lots of pictures (as you might expect). Here’s a big pile of pictures and videos from the girls’ first month.

They’re finally here and things are crazy (but good). We dropped Daniel off at Ken and Linda’s last Monday morning (January 30th) and then checked in at the hospital. We were delayed a bit because there were more emergency c-sections and deliveries than anticipated, but around 1:45 pm, the anesthesiologist got Sandra hooked up to her IV and meds. We put on scrubs and Sandra was wheeled over to the operating room. The procedure was quick and at 2:24 and 2:25, respectively, Anastasia May Rousos and Josephine Marie Rousos were born! Stacie was bigger – 7 pounds, 6 ounces and 19″ long. Josie was still good sized, though, at 7 pounds, 2 ounces, and 18.25″.
Both girls had some amniotic fluid in their lungs, but Stacie was able to get hers up pretty quickly. Josie had to go to the NICU for observation. They watched her until around 7:30 and then sent her back to our room saying that she worked it out on her own and that she was fine. She still coughed and spit up a bit more than Stacie at first, but she’s doing great now.
Sandra did really well throughout the procedure and recovery, though the anesthetic did affect her a lot – she was numb for a long while and quite sick Monday evening. By Tuesday evening, though, she was feeling much better and up walking (slowly) around. The pediatricians that checked the girls said that they were perfect. One of the nurses at a follow-up appointment said that they’re the healthiest twins she’s ever seen! They’re lighter now than when they were born (they were both 6 pounds 14 ounces at their one week checkup – Josie caught up!) but the doctor said that he wasn’t concerned because they’re gaining weight (after initially losing some) and eating well. They’re only in the 25th percentile for weight, which is new for us, but that’s still pretty good for twins.
We’re still getting used to having three kids at home (and the fact that rarely want to sleep at the same time), but we’ve discovered the girls sleep well in their car seats and that Stacie likes her pacifier. So, we’ve got some tricks now for when we get really tired.
We were concerned at first that we might not be able to tell them apart, but that was unfounded. They’re clearly different looking (to us, at least) and although we didn’t do any tests, we can tell they’re fraternal twins. Stacie definitely favors Sandra’s side with a lighter complexion, broader face, and dimples. Josie looks more like me with a taller forehead and a cleft chin. They’re both, of course, adorable. Stacie is definitely more laid back. On the other hand, she also startles more easily, so she’s more likely to be bothered by Daniel or the cat making noise while she’s asleep. They both seem to sleep really well through the other crying, though, which is great.
Speaking of Daniel, he’s doing well, though it’s quite a transition for him. He’s been pretty emotional and very attached to Mommy lately. He’s really good with the girls, but I can tell that he’s having a bit of trouble adjusting to all the new rules (’don’t play with Josie’s car seat’, ‘Mommy can’t pick you up’), and the general decrease in attention. I’ve tried to take him to the park or other places just the two of us, but he still wants lots of Mommy time (which is scarce with all the newborn feedings) and he’s sensitive about us ‘getting rid of him’ (he’s decided not to go play with friends once or twice because his baby sisters weren’t going). At one point, he asked if it was time to ‘take baby sisters back’. I explained that, no, they were staying. Even though he’s been a bit emotional with all the changes, he’s a good big brother. When he first met them, he wanted to see them both and know who was who. Since then, he gets them mixed up on first encountering one (and will just call it ‘that baby’), but once we tell him that it’s Stacie or Josie, he remembers until he’s separated from them – and even deduces that the other baby must be the other one. He likes talking to them, touching them gently (which he does very well), and he kisses them goodnight now. Also, he’s getting really good at talking. He can say complex sentences. Yesterday, he said ‘Daddy carry Daniel up steps and down slide, please’ when he wanted to go down a slide at the park that was too big for him to do alone. Another good one was – ‘Daddy is big. Sisters are little. Daniel is little and big’.
Sandra and I never expected to have twins, but we’re both amazed and excited with our new little blessings.
Below are some pictures of our growing family.

January 30th – that’s when Sandra’s c-section is scheduled for the twins! During one of her recent ultrasounds, they found that Stacy (still unsure of spelling) had turned breech and didn’t have much room to turn back around. We hoped that she would turn back, but scheduled a c-section since that’s how the girls will have to be born if she doesn’t. As it turns out, she’s still breech and now Josie has turned to join her! For much of the pregnancy, they had their heads together. When Stacy turned around, Josie followed a couple days later. We can see them with their heads together again in the ultrasounds. It would be cute if it weren’t so annoying that they’re breech Anyhow, the hospital has a rule that c-sections can’t be scheduled before 39 weeks except in cases of medical emergencies. So, January 30th is the day! We’ll see if Sandra makes it until then. So far, she’s doing well and isn’t showing signs of early labor, but the girls are getting big. At the last checkup (on Thursday), the doctors estimated that Stacy is 6 pounds 5 ounces, and Josie is about 5 pounds 12 ounces. Except for facing the wrong direction, they’re both very healthy.
Daniel continues to grow, as well. He had a lot of fun on Christmas (he’s very good at opening presents now) and has been intrigued by all the baby things showing up in the house. We now have two infant car seats, a double stroller, a pack-and-play (until their crib arrives), a dresser full of pink clothes, a swing, a new noise maker (for our room), and all manner of other girly things (towels, pacifiers, clothes, blankets, all pink and purple, naturally). Daniel has two baby dolls that he uses to ‘try out’ all the equipment. He has also enjoyed playing with his pretend tools recently, and still likes Thomas the Train (both playing with him and watching him) very much. He’s spending more time putting puzzles together, and is getting very good. He can handle up to about ten pieces on his own. He’s talking a lot more (and also makes up nonsense words a lot, recently), and continues to love music and dancing. He also got his two year pictures taken. You can find some of the better pictures in the gallery below. He’s developing a sense of humor. In the past couples weeks, he’s laughed on his own (without anyone else laughing) at funny things in a TV show (’Pingu’) and a book (’But not the Hippopotamus’ by Sandra Boynton). Recognizing jokes and laughing is a new development. In fact, in both those cases, he was really rolling with laughter; it was cute.
Up until recently, we’ve had a mild winter here, which has been nice. This weekend, though, we got some snow. Even though the slick roads are a pain, it was fun to get to play in the snow with Daniel. He was concerned about getting dirty and didn’t want to touch the snow. But, after much coaxing, I got him to ‘help’ me build a snowman. His idea of helping was to push the snowball a couple feet, notice that he was getting snow on his boots and then stop wherever he was and say “Boots dirty. Daniel just watch.”

A Day in the Life of Daniel (Five minutes of Daniel playing with whatever he happens across)
It has been a busy fall! We’re counting down the days until the girls arrive. Although their due date is 2/7, the doctor says that twins are very likely to be early – her best guess for Sandra is 3 weeks early (which is later than many twins, thanks to Daniel being so big and late). That would mean they’ll be here mid-January. We now own a double stroller, two car seats, a mini van, and lots of pink clothes and blankets. We still need to get a bed for them, though, and some other items, so preparations continue. Also, we’ve picked out names – our daughters will be Anastasia May Rousos (Stacy) and Josephine Marie Rousos (Josie). Sandra would like me to mention that we’re not certain how we’re spelling Stacy yet. Daniel knows there are ‘babies in Mommy’s tummy’ and knows their names. We suspect he may still be surprised at how much things change when they arrive, though!
Amidst all the baby preparations, it’s also been holiday season. Daniel turned two last month. At his checkup he was 80th percentile for height (almost 3 feet tall) and 50th percentile for weight (a little shy of 28 pounds). The doctor says he is very healthy. We went back to Ohio to celebrate his birthday and Thanksgiving. We typically visit for Christmas, but Sandra’s doctor thought that was too late for her to fly, so we did Thanksgiving this year instead. We had a ‘mini Christmas’ while we were in Ohio so our families could watch Daniel open presents in person. Between all the birthday festivities and early Christmas presents, Daniel was thoroughly spoiled throughout the trip. He got lots of trains, which he loves, and Ma was very good at helping him assemble the tracks. Back in Washington, we had my work holiday party at the Space Needle, which was fun, and a church Christmas party that included gingerbread house making (Daniel liked eating the ingredients and watching me fumble with his house – it turns out I’m not a great gingerbread craftsman).

A couple weeks ago, Daniel told Sandra that the baby sisters wanted to hear music, so he played them a song:
It’s been a busy end-of-summer and fall since the last post. The big news, in case you haven’t heard it, is that we found out the twins are both girls! The doctor still says they’re probably not identical (won’t know for sure until they’re born) but they’re both little baby girls. Sandra’s had several ultrasounds recently (some pictures below) and the babies are very healthy. They are 80th and 70th percentile for size on charts for single babies, so they’re growing really well. Like Daniel, they’ll be big healthy babies. Sandra’s had a bit of hip trouble recently due to loosening joints and having to carry double the cargo, but otherwise is feeling better. The morning sickness has let up some, which is nice.
Right now we’re busy trying to prepare for our new arrivals. We’ve begun mini-van shopping. Trying to strike a balance between price and reliability, we’re looking at vans that are a few years old. We drove an ‘08 Honda Odyssey that we liked and are going to drive some more Wednesday (maybe our next blog post will include a picture of a new van ). We’re also busily brainstorming names but still haven’t had much luck. We came up with Daniel’s name within a couple hours of seeing his ultrasound picture and we’ve known that our first daughter (Baby A, as it turns out) would be Anastasia (Stacy) May Rousos for a long time. But Baby B has become quite the dilemma! We’ve considered lots of names but none have seemed quite right yet.
Also as part of preparing for the babies, we took a short family vacation down to San Francisco to get away (while we can do it with only one kid) and see some friends. We had beautiful weather and got to enjoy lots of fine sights and experiences. Daniel liked Pier 39 and the sea lions that live there, especially. He also liked riding on the carousel on the pier. One of the animals to ride on was a dolphin. He always chose that one and excitedly told me and Sandra that he got to ride on ‘Baby Beluga’. Daniel has been listening to Raffi a lot lately and particularly likes Baby Beluga. You can see him dancing to it (with Daddy singing along, as is always demanded) in the video below. If you find Daddy’s rendition of Baby Beluga less charming than Daniel does, feel free to watch it muted
Along with lots and lots of dancing, there are assorted pictures of Daniel playing, some ultrasound pictures, a picture of the twins’ first new clothes, and pics from our trips to California and to Ohio for Aunt Dory and Uncle Pat’s wedding.

It’s been a busy summer. Between a couple fun vacations (first Chicago with Uncle Danny and his family, then camping with Sandra’s family, plus some visitors here) and Sandra getting pregnant and then getting shingles, our days have been full (but exciting).
It’s been a while since our last post, so we’ve got lots of pictures saved up. Below are some pics of Daniel’s second summer. He sure is moving around a lot more and doing more things than he was during the first summer! His new favorite activity is coloring. He uses big sheets of poster board because they don’t move around as much as paper. He’ll color on one sheet of cardboard for a few days or a week – he actually seems to prefer to color on top of existing pictures. He likes Mommy and Daddy to draw with him. He instructs us to draw particular things (circles, trains, etc) in particular spots and then he scribbles all over them. Speaking of him giving instructions, he’s speaking a lot more now. He can repeat about anything you ask him to and he uses short multi-word sentences now (”Mommy sit, please” or “Daddy draw circle”). Actually, it just occurred to me that almost all his sentences are commands. I guess he figures those are the most important things to get across
Besides coloring and talking a lot, he still loves music and dances and sings a lot. There are a couple dancing videos below. His singing either sounds like ‘waa waa da da waa waa’ or, if he knows some words, he shouts out the words as he hears the ones he knows. When we sing ‘Twinkle Twinkle Little Star’ he shouts out the last word of each line.
We’ve told Daniel that we’re going to have two new babies soon, but I’m not sure he really understands yet. We showed him the ultrasound pictures and told him it was babies, so now he says ‘babies’ when he sees the ultrasounds. Still, I’m not sure he totally gets it. He is interested in other babies that he sees, though, and treats them very gently, so that bodes well.
Daniel will be ~26 months old when the twins are born. To avoid being overwhelmed with diapers, Sandra has the ambitious plan of having Daniel potty trained by then. Of course, it will depend on whether he’s ready. But, just in case, Sandra’s put his little potty in the bathroom and Grammy has sent a few potty training books that Daniel loves. Although he has yet to do anything productive on the potty, he really enjoys sitting on it, sipping his juice, and reading books. He also will set his stuffed animals on the potty and read to them. So, even if he isn’t ready to use it yet, at least he likes it!
Daniel continues to like Thomas the Train and is slowly accumulating a fair number of trains. He knows almost all of their names (and there are a lot of them!). He has a brochure that comes with the trains that has pictures of all the toys you can buy and he can tell me who almost every train on the sheet is! This amazes me because he still can’t tell me the difference between red and blue (even though he will very clearly show me which color to use when I’m drawing with him). Go figure. Priorities.
As they say, a picture is worth a thousand words, so here are a whole lot of pictures (and a few videos) of Daniel’s summer.

Sorry it’s been so long since the last post! We’ve got some fun pictures and videos to share, but things have been extra busy with our summer vacation in Ohio and lots going on out west. I’ve been trying to write more (I’ve written 14 of 51 planned chapters for a first draft of a novel I’m working on) and have found that sort of thing cuts into blog writing time! Since we’re behind, I will try to get some pictures and videos up soon. Daniel is talking lots more and loves to dance.
However, even before I make time for that post, I need to make another quick one on a different topic: Sandra’s pregnant!
And, not only is she pregnant, but she’s pregnant with twins! We’re both very excited and also pretty nervous. It sounds both like a great blessing and a lot of work! We were both shocked and in denial when the doctor told us. I asked whether there might be some mistake and Sandra listed reasons that this was ‘impossible’ (no twins on either side of the family, no fertility drugs, still breast-feeding at the time, etc). But the doctor said she was sure! They’re due February 7th, but twins often come early so we’re probably looking at January babies. We figure this is Daniel’s fault since he insists things come in pairs. If you give him anything – a cookie, a toy, a blanket – he will immediately say ‘Two!’ in request of another. This way, at least, he will get ‘Two!’ little siblings!
Sandra had her second checkup this week (she’s 11.5 weeks pregnant so far) and got a pleasant surprise when the doctor said that they were trying out a new ultrasound machine, so they could do an extra ultrasound to test the machine and get early pictures of the babies. The pictures are below. They’re each about the size of a lime currently, and the doctor says they look very healthy to her. Sandra’s been having a lot of morning sickness (twins usually makes that sort of thing worse) but we know that it will all be worth it when they get here in the winter Also, in case you’re curious, the doctor says it’s very likely that they’re not identical but she’s not 100% sure. We’ll find out genders towards the end of September.
Well, we just returned from Daniel’s first camping trip! I was pretty nervous about how he’d do sleeping in a tent (especially when I found out it would be down in the 40s at night). But, he did really well. He had some trouble the first night (he took a couple hours to fall asleep and woke for an hour or so in the middle of the night), but after that he did great – he slept from 9 – 7:30 the next two nights. He did have trouble napping since the tent was hot during the day and the dog at the neighboring campsite was making noise (instead of napping, Daniel stood in his pack and play and said ‘goggy!’), but we just drove him around for a bit on Saturday and Sunday afternoon so he would sleep.
The camping trip overall was great- Ken planned it for us (thanks Ken) and Ken and Doug both made sure that we were well fed and cared for. Daniel’s favorite parts of the trip were getting to play so much with his friends (he adores Marilynn) and the fact that our campsite was next to the pool. He’d wake up at 7:30 in the morning, leave the tent, and tell me “pool, please.” Unfortunately, the pool wasn’t heated, so we had to strike a balance between delaying him until the day was warmer or dealing with a very cold baby (and daddy). Daniel also enjoyed having Doug’s dog Bailey around. Daniel was a little scared of Tank, Doug’s other dog, because he was noisier and more energetic.
Also, he did remarkably well during the car ride (5-ish hours, not counting stops). He slept, played, ate, looked at books, and was generally good (except for an isolated incident when blankie was dropped on the floor of the car while Sandra was on I-90 and hysteria ensued; Sandra had to pull over!).
Other than the camping trip, Daniel has been his usual cute self. He loves Thomas the Train (in particular, he really likes Percy, Toby, Gordon, and Emily) and is getting quite good at talking. If he’s in the right mood, he’ll repeat a lot of what we say. He enjoys hanging out with friends (in addition to Ken and Linda’s girls, his friends Kylah and Liz come over pretty regularly). ‘K’ is Daniel’s favorite letter thanks to Kylah. When he sees a K, he will tell us what it is: “K for Kylah.” When they’re out together, people often think that Kylah is his older sister because they look a lot alike (see in the pictures in this post).
Below are some pictures of the camping trip, as well as some other videos and pictures from the last month. There are some from Daniel and Sandra at the zoo (with Ken and the girls) and some of Daniel playing at the park. Besides all the outdoor pictures, there are a couple from an impromptu trip to Ohio that Daniel and Sandra took a few weeks ago. He and Sandra enjoyed seeing everyone – especially Sandra’s friend Rachel (who was home for a visit from Italy) and her kids – Rayna and Mace.
Fair warning – there are lots of pictures and videos. Probably only grandmas will want to look at all of them

Here’s a long overdue post! Sorry to be so lax in getting the blog updated. In fact, some of the pictures below are from our last trip to Ohio (March) and Daniel’s already planning to head back again (in a week).
Since the last post, there’s been lots of fun and learning. Daniel enjoyed hunting for Easter eggs and has been enjoying the warmer weather (he really likes walks in the park – he asks for them by putting on his jacket and saying ‘go’ or ’stroller’ at the door). He has also learned a lot of new words. His current favorites are ‘two’ and ‘no’. When he doesn’t like something (whether we can control it or not), he shakes his head back and forth and says “no, no, no, no”. And any time he sees more than one of something, he very excitedly shouts ‘two!’ (or if I try to give him one cookie, he helpfully suggests ‘two!’). Other new additions to his vocabulary include: play, stroller (comes out like ’soe-ah’), crash, bubbles, crayon, book, hot, cold, pool. Also, tonight he learned to say ‘pray’. He says it when we fold our hands! Very cute.
As mentioned earlier, he loves walks in the park (he likes to walk himself – not just be pushed in the stroller), and he loves his swim classes. When we go to the Y, he says ‘pool’. He’s also cares very much that things be ‘usual’. If things are out of place (our shoes, for example), he puts them away. When Sandra moves furniture to vacuum, he tells her where to put the chairs back. When he goes out, he insists on wearing a coat (and usually hat) even when it’s warm. He’s a big fan of hats, in general, currently and wears them around the house sometimes (especially his Akron Zoo hat). Also, he loves Thomas the Train – particularly the musical episode. I’ve probably heard the song ‘Surprises’ about 200 times.
Below are some pictures and videos from the past couple months. There are some from Easter weekend. On Saturday, we met friends at an outdoor Easter Egg ‘hunt’ (it was like trick-or-treating for candy in eggs). Then, on Sunday, we hid plastic eggs in the living room after church and had friends over in the evening.
